What is HomeGrown?
HomeGrown was founded by two former public school educators in southern Iowa, Jamie Porter and Alena Phillips. The idea began with a dream of teaching students in a way where kids were allowed to be kids, where they were learning skills to help them become successful adults, where they learn the truth about the world and about God, and where families were involved and invested in their child's academic success. The pair shared their dream with Pastor Danny at the Osceola First Christian Church and he encouraged them to act on their ideas. They quickly formed a team and began brainstorming how to make this dream a reality. HomeGrown Christian Learning Center opened for instruction on September 5, 2023.
HomeGrown is NOT a school by any legal definition applicable in the State of Iowa. Rather, it is a private, non-profit organization that provides educational assistance to children and families operating within Iowa's definition of "competent private instruction". HomeGrown is a 501(c)(3) non-profit operating as an educational support organization, not a school. In the forseeable future, HomeGrown does not intend to pursue state or private accreditation as a school, nor does it anticipate receiving any state, federal, or local government funding.Â
